How to Plan a Built-in Wardrobe Interior That Actually Works

Many wardrobes look great on handover day. A few months later, shirts are piling up on shelves, long dresses are folded over on the cabinet floor, and drawers won't open all the way because they catch on the hinges.

Most of these problems have nothing to do with the size of the wardrobe. They come from an interior layout that was never planned around the clothes of the people who actually use it.

Start with your clothes, not the cabinet

Before talking about colours or handles, open your current wardrobe and do a rough count: how much needs to be hung and how much is folded, how many long pieces you own, and how many small items such as ties, belts and watches. These numbers are the starting point for every compartment.

Numbers to know before you order

  • Cabinet depth: 60 cm. Most hangers are about 45 cm wide, so you need room for shoulders to clear the doors. (Read more: The 30/45/60 depth rule)
  • Long hanging: about 150–170 cm clear height. For dresses, coats and full-length trousers. Most homes only need one such section.
  • Short hanging: about 90–100 cm clear height. For shirts, jackets and skirts. Stack two rails in one section and you double the hanging space without a bigger wardrobe.
  • Folded shelves: 30–35 cm apart. Taller gaps lead to stacks that topple, and shelves wider than about 90 cm tend to sag over time.
  • Drawers: 15–20 cm high. Enough for underwear, socks and small items. Keep them at waist height or lower so you can see everything inside.
  • Top compartments above 200 cm. For things you don't reach for every day: spare blankets, luggage, off-season clothes.

The 3 most common mistakes

  1. Drawers that hit the hinges. A drawer behind a hinged door must be set back far enough to clear the hinge and handle, or it will only open halfway.
  2. Drawers behind the sliding-door overlap. Sliding doors open one side at a time. If a drawer sits right behind the overlap, it can never be pulled out.
  3. Too much long hanging. Long sections take up a lot of space, yet in a hot climate like Thailand most clothes are short. Two stacked short rails usually work harder.

Your clothes live in a closed box, so materials matter

A wardrobe is a closed space where your clothes spend almost all their time. If the cabinet is made from board that releases volatile compounds, the smell builds up and ends up in the clothes you wear. (Read more: Formaldehyde in your home)

At fync, every cabinet carcass is built from ENF-grade plywood, which limits formaldehyde emission to 0.025 mg/m³, half the E0 limit (0.050 mg/m³). Before we draw anything, our team asks about your clothes first: how many pieces are hung, how many are folded, who uses which side. Only then do we turn it into a design cut on CNC machines to millimetre accuracy, so every compartment has a purpose from day one.

Checklist before you talk to a built-in team

  • Roughly count your long-hanging, short-hanging and folded clothes
  • Decide on hinged or sliding doors before placing drawers
  • Measure the actual ceiling height instead of relying on the floor plan
  • Ask clearly what material and grade are used for the carcass and shelves

A good wardrobe isn't measured by how many compartments it has, but by whether every compartment has a purpose.
